The Diploma in Counselling programme aims to provide students with the fundamental knowledge and skills to counselling and endow with essential techniques and theories of counselling. This programme is also intended to explore and gain insight client-counsellor awareness and relationship.

To further develop counselling skills, this course is structured in a way to encourage and support personal growth and self-awareness. Thus helps students to work with diverse cliental issues and work diligently by respecting cultural values and beliefs. Most importantly, this course prepares students and work within ethical codes of counselling practice.

The course is therefore a perfect preparation for students who wish to embark into counselling practice or helping professions.

NOTE: This is not a recognised qualification to become a registered counsellor.  Please refer to the Singapore Association for Counselling on how to become a registered counsellor in Singapore.

Entry Requirements

  • 2 subjects (English Compulsory) pass with C6 and above at GCE ‘O’ Level passes (OR)
  • BMC Certificate in Clinical and Counselling Psychology (OR)
  • Mature Students with relevant working experience or industry experience may be considered on case-by-case basis.
  • 16 years old and above.
  • In addition to the requirements stated above, students entering the programme and whose first language is not English or students whose medium of instruction their qualifying programme was not English will be required to demonstrate a proficiency in English to IELTS 5.5 or an equivalent recognised qualification.

Module Synopsis

Module 1: Introduction to Counselling Skills and Techniques

This module is aimed to demonstrate the use of counselling skills and other relevant techniques that is needed in the counselling profession. In this course you will learn the basic core counselling skills, such as how to accurately reflect back what the client is saying, summarizing and asking effective open-ended questions. Active listening skills, paraphrasing, feedback are some of the valuable techniques that will be highlighted.

Module 2: Academic and Disciplinary Counselling

This module is aimed to increase client’s view of life, increases their inventory of coping resources and enables the client to make choices for change in themself, the situation and the environment, without devastating consequences to self or others. Application of expert skills and strategies in therapeutic alliance will be taught. The ultimate goal is to teach client, goal settings and interventions and how to manage daily crisis such as relationship failure, self-esteem, motivation, disciplinary issues, to name a few. By end of this module, students will be able to guide and support client with academic and life long journey.

Module 3: Family Counselling with Crisis Intervention

This module aims to look closely at some challenging issues faced by families in our contemporary society. Issues such as cultural difference, family violence, divorce, parenting roles and styles, trauma, abuse, suicide is some fundamental crisis that will be dealt with. Theories such as family therapy, psychodynamics theory, cognitive behavior therapy, attachment theory, social theory together with intervention, treatment and methods of assessment will also be emphasised. By end of this module, students will be equipped with various techniques to assist family in need.

Module 4: Career and Guidance Counselling

This module is aimed to provide an opportunity for clients to discuss and discover prospects in their career plans. Formulating a set of attainable goals, work life balance, personal values and beliefs, identifying and addressing problems at work, are some issues that will be focused. Theories such as Maslow Hierarchy, Enneagram of Personality, and Character Building will be used to address these issues. Competencies in career development and career coaching skills will also be adopted. By end of this module, students will have sustainable knowledge to assist client with career options.

Module 5: Counselling Specific Cliental Concerns

This module is aimed to cover a wide range of mental health issues. Common issues such as anxiety, depression, grief and loss, posttraumatic stress disorder, bullying, eating disorder, substance abuse will be discussed. This module prepares students to form a strong foundation to counsel and handle such issues. Techniques and therapies, together with evaluation, assessment, and treatment plan are also explained and supervised by our professional lecturers. By end of this module, students will have a resilient groundwork to common mental health issues.

Module 6: Counselling Ethics and Professional Issues

This module is aimed to highlight the importance of being a good counsellor.

Each professional counsellor has an enormous responsibility to uphold the public trust and legality. This module covers the essential ethics needed such as Code of Ethics, Maintaining Confidentiality, Working with Diverse Culture; Client Relationship with Boundaries and Limitations will be emphasised. By the end of this module, students will be able to comprehend the complexity in ethical decision-making.

Method of Delivery

Students can achieve the guided learning hours in combination of lectures, face-to-face classroom interactions, role-play, self study and group study as well as research/project work. Students will be required to attend a certain number of lecture hours to support their studies, and will receive feedback/guidance to complete the learning hours.

Expected date of release of Assessment result

Assessment results will be available to the students within 3 months upon completion of the last assessment for that assessment cycle. Appeal (if any) on assessment results must be lodged within 7 days after the release of assessment results.

University Pathways

Students who successfully complete the Diploma in Counselling are eligible to gain progression to a Bachelors’ or Masters’ programme offered by universities worldwide. Acceptance into such programme is at the respective universities’ discretion.
