Introduction

This course is suitable for people intending to embark on a helping career in Counselling, as well as for those who are keen on research . The course consists of three main components:

• Students are given opportunities throughout the course to practice, experience and evaluate the importance of listening, reflecting back, empathy, acceptance, genuineness and congruence in the context of the Counselling relationship.

• Topics such as loss, bereavement, transitions, change, diversity, stress, group dynamics are covered. The programme has contemporary topics and provides students the opportunity to have an integrated approach to Counselling.

• Students are introduced to the concept of personal development in the context of Counselling training and are given exercises to raise awareness of personal issues as well as opportunities to share these insights.

This degree is directly awarded by University of Hertfordshire, UK, one of the ambitious and enterpreneurial Universities. It offers excellence in teaching, learning and research and puts students at the heart of its activities.

Programme Duration:

Part time: Minimum 10 months

Method of Delivery:

Lectures, Practical sessions, Seminars and Workshops

Award Criteria:

Students have to pass in all the 4 modules to be awarded with the degree.

Students must satisfy the minimum attendance requirements (75% for local students and 90% for international students) for the award of Certificate of Attendance (COA) in all the modules.

Grading System:

Each module is assessed for 100%. Assessment is based on coursework. The degree classification is calculated as below:

• First class – 70% to 100%

• Upper second class – 60% to 69%

• Lower second class – 50% to 59%

• Third class – 40% to 49%

Assessment Information:

All the modules are assessed based on course work assessed by the university.

Award of certificate will be available to the students within 3 months of the last assessment for that assessment cycle. Appeal on Assessment results needs to be done within 2 weeks from the date of release of results for that assessment cycle. after course completion

Certificate of Higher Education/University Diploma in Counselling

This part-time, two semester, 10 month programme consists of 4 modules leading to either a Certificate of Higher Education or a University Diploma. It forms the pre-qualifying training for those who wish to study for the professional qualification in Counselling through the MA/ Postgraduate Diploma in Contemporary Therapeutic Counselling leading towards the accreditation as Counsellors.

Module Synopsis

The programme provides an introduction to the theory and practice of Counselling through a variety of approaches but with particular reference to psychodynamic approach. Studies include material which develops themes such as attachment, separation, loss, important relationships, the nature of change, core conditions for Counselling, personal perception and family dynamics. Videos and journal articles are presented and discussed. Practice sessions and role play are used to develop Counselling skills. You will be expected to write a personal journal on your learning experience.

Module 1 and Module 2 emphasises on experiential learning in task groups, workshops and seminars. The second semester which involves Module 3 and Module 4 helps to prepare the student academically for the MA/ Postgraduate Diploma in Contemporary Therapeutic Counselling by developing Counselling skills, the capacity for reflection on personal experience and a grasp of key theoretical texts and concepts. There will be an ongoing, non-directed, personal development experience with a SAC accredited Counsellor.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Certificate of Higher Education
A minimum of ‘N’ levels is expected but those with relevant working experience may be considered on a case by case basis.

University Diploma in Counselling:
Suitable qualifications include as a minimum (Level 1 60 credits):

1. A Degree/Year 1 of a Degree

2. Nursing

3. Teaching

4. Social work

5. Equivalent professional training

6. Minimum ‘O’ levels with relevant working experience

Students will go through an interview as part of the application process describing the relevance of the programme to current life interests and previous occupational interests.

Additional information
Due the nature of personal disclosure, students are required to sign a confidentiality agreement. Confidentiality is extended to the staff team.
