PROGRAMME STRCUTURE

Exit Award: MA/ PostGraduate Diploma in Contemporary Therapeutic Counselling

MODULE DESCRIPTION

The modules consist of theoretical seminars, practice workshops, client work presentations and personal development group.

Module 1 Theory and Practice of Counselling 1

The core components are:

- Overview of Counselling Theories

- Human Growth and Development

Students will familiarise themselves with a pluralistic and critical approach to the core concepts and principles of all counselling theories, with particular reference to the notions of human nature and self-in-relation and Human Growth & Development . Their critique of theory will be informed by principles from phenomenology and social constructionism.

Module 2 Theory and Practice of Counselling 2

The core components are:

- Counselling Skills

- Group work

- Marital and Family Therapy

Students will develop further their critical understanding of the concepts and principles of an integrative approach to counselling with particular reference to self - in - relationship with others and to the therapeutic relationship in particular, Counselling skills, Group work, Marital and Family Therapy. Sexualities, Gender/ transgender, Cultural awareness, Sibling relationships and Group Theory will be considered.

Module 3 Critical Approaches to Psychopathology

The core components are:

- Helping Relationships

- Psychopathology

Students will be given first hand, practical experience of comparative approaches to the experiences of distress and disease, such as anxiety, depression, narcissism, trauma, self harm, suicide and psychosis. Students will compare their own approach to counselling with other approaches, such as the medical model, cognitive behavioural therapy and existential therapy. This will facilitate them to locate their own counselling approach within current theoretical paradigms. This will further enable them to evaluate the advantages and limitations of their own theoretical and practical approach to counselling.

Module 4 Research Methods and Professional and Ethical Issues

The core components are:

- Appraisal and Research

- Counselling Ethics

- Psychosynthesis

Students will familiarise themselves with the principles of research methodologies, with particular reference to practitioner research. They will consider critically current debates and controversies regarding comparative research methodologies, including both qualitative and quantitative, evidence-based approaches as applied to counselling. Particular reference will be made to notions of "evidence" and "outcome" and to the social, cultural, ethical and organisational contexts within which counselling takes place. This will enable them to consider critically the language and assumptions of their approach.

Module 5 MA Dissertation

This module is designed to enable students to draw on one relevant research method, discourse analysis, narrative analysis or phenomenology to examine the strengths and limitations of their theoretical and practical approach to working with this theoretical concept, theme or client issue. They will then critically examine the strengths and limitations of critical reflective practice and case study work as research evidence in counselling and evaluate the contribution of their study to the ethical practice of counselling and to the field of counselling in general.

Students will attend supervision with their academic supervisors individually and in small group. There will be a total of ten hours academic supervision/tutorial work. Academic supervision/tutorial work is mandatory
