BMC’s Preparatory Course for GCE ‘N’ Level provides a comprehensive programme that equips students with the necessary learning competencies that prepare them for the annual examination of the joint awarding authorities- Ministry of Education, Singapore and the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) for the Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘N’ Levels.

The strong foundation of this programme lies on the series of internal assessments namely: Mid-Year and Preliminary Examinations, which are facilitated by the Department once in the Academic Year for the respective examination cycle. These assessments are carefully designed and prepared by the internal and competent assessors of the department, to gauge the readiness of the students for the actual examination.

Entry Requirements:

  • At least 15 years old as of 1st January of the examination year.
  • Applicants should meet one of these additional requirements:
    • Completed Secondary 2 education (or equivalent) with Pass (at least C6 and above) in English and Mathematics, OR Passed BMC entrance test

  • A full-time course runs 5 days in a week with each day lasting 3 hours. Therefore, all Singaporean applicants who intend to enrol into a full-time GCE N(A) or O-Level preparatory course will need to get the approval of the Ministry of Education (MoE). BMC will assist in submitting such applications to the MoE.

  • Any Singaporean male applicant who wants to defer from full-time national service must be enrolled as a full-time student. Such an application will need to be approved by the MoE first. Do take note that the approval of NS deferment is at the discretion of the Ministry of Defence.

  • Admission is subject to approval of the BMC management.

Module Synopsis

A.   English (Subject Code: 1190)

This module prepares the students to communicate effectively in English as a result of their development in the following areas:

  1. Listen, read and view critically and with accuracy, understanding and appreciation a wide range of literary and informational/functional texts from print and non-print sources.
  2. Speak, write and represent in internationally acceptable English (Standard English) that is grammatical, fluent, mutually intelligible and appropriate for different purposes, audiences, contexts and cultures.
  3. Understand and use internationally acceptable English (Standard English) grammar and vocabulary accurately and appropriately as well as understand how speakers/writers put words together and use language to communicate meaning and achieve impact.

B.   Mathematics Syllabus A (Subject Code: 4045)

The syllabus is intended to provide students with fundamental mathematical knowledge and skills. The content is organised into three strands, namely, Number and Algebra, Geometry and Measurement, and Statistics and Probability. Besides conceptual understanding and skills proficiency explicated in the content strands, development of process skills that are involved in the process of acquiring and applying mathematical knowledge is also emphasised. These include reasoning, communication and connections, thinking skills and heuristics, and application and modelling; and are developed based on the three content strands.

C.   Science – Physics, Chemistry (Subject Code: 5105)

The ‘N’ Science (Physics) provides students with a coherent comprehension of energy, matter, and their relationships. It focuses on investigating natural phenomena and then applying patterns, models, principles, theories, and laws to explain the physical behavior of the universe. On the other hand, the ‘N’ Science (Chemistry and Biology) is designed to place less emphasis on factual materials and greater emphasis on the understanding and application of scientific concepts and principles.

E.   Humanities – Social Studies, Geography (Subject Code: 2175)

Geography

As a subject, Geography emphasises the integrative study of physical and human environments to enable students to gain a better understanding of their own space and other parts of the world. The syllabus is structured around three major themes, namely ‘Our Dynamic Planet’, ‘Our Changing World’ and ‘Geographical Skills and Investigations’.

History

The syllabus seeks to examine the key forces and developments which have shaped international history in the 20th century. Studying the impact of the large scale conflicts and the rise of new regimes will allow students to appreciate the key forces and developments that challenged Europe’s dominance in world affairs. Through a study of the devastating effects of the two World Wars and the unchecked ambitions of the authoritarian states, students will better appreciate the need for collective security to prevent future conflicts. Students will understand that attempts at world peace are often challenged by the interests and ambitions of individuals and nations. The study of Communist Russia, Nazi Germany and Japan will enable students to understand how totalitarian regimes can bring about both benefits for some, and great costs for others.

Mother Tongue (Six Months, Up to June)

G.   Chinese (Subject Code: 1196)

The mother tongue language subjects cover the understanding and application of the language. These syllabuses also intend to enhance the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of the students’ mother tongue.

H.   Malay (Subject Code: 1197)

I.   Tamil (Subject Code: 1198)

J.   Principles of Accounts (Subject Code: 7088) 

This module is designed to develop an understanding of the principles and concepts of accounting and their applications in a variety of business situations. Students will acquire basic knowledge in double entry and develop the ability to prepare, present, and analyse financial statements.

The module will only start once we have 10 students in the waiting list. A separate bridging bookkeeping programme will be recommended for students who have not done accounts before.

Award Criteria

Students shall be awarded a certificate of attendance upon meeting the minimum 75% attendance requirement for local students (part-time) and 90% for international students and local students (full-time).

Grading System

Grades reflected on the Academic Transcripts are upon 100%, wherein the following equivalents are being used: 0-49%= Failed; and 50%-100=Passed.

Assessment Information

Two (2) Internal Examinations are conducted in an Academic Year namely: Mid-Year and Preliminary Examination. On the other hand, Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Examination which is conducted in Singapore annually in October and November. All students are expected to register for their GCE A Level Examination online at www.seab.gov.sg.

Expected date of release of Assessment result

Assessment results for Internal Examinations (Mid-Year and Preliminary Examinations) are released to students within four (4) weeks of the last assessment for that examination cycle. While the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education ( N(Academic)) Examination Results are released mid-December through the Singapore Examination and Assessment Board (SEAB).

Basic and General Education Department (BGED)
Mr Justin Poon Tuck Yuen is currently the Head of Department for Basic and General Education (BGED) at BMC International College. He manages the Preparatory Courses for the Singapore-Cambridge GCE N(A), O- and A- Levels examinations.

Justin Poon holds a Master Degree in Computer Studies from the University of Lancaster and Graduate Diploma in Computer Studies from Leicester Polytechnic, both from UK. In addition, he was an ex-Certified Information Systems Auditor (ex-CISA) awarded by ISACA, USA. He also holds certifications from the Singapore Institute of Technical education (ITE) for the Effective Supervisor, Coaching Skills, Planning & Implementing OJT and Instructional Skills.

Overall, Justin Poon has 23 years experience in teaching within different academic environments, from GCE, diplomas to degrees (BA, BSc and MBA for programmes from the University of East London, University of Derby and University of Nottingham Trent) in Mathematics, Business, Entrepreneurship and Information Technology related subjects. He has being managing BGED since January 2016.

Prior to his teaching career, he has worked as a Programmer, Systems Manager, Information Systems Auditor, IT Manager, Project Manager and Financial Consultant.

Qualification
Master Degree in Computer Studies from the University of Lancaster.
