Certificate in English for Foreign Students - Elementary
Objectives
- To train those who have basic English language skills to speak and write in proper English and with confidence
- To teach students to acquire skills in the following areas:
- Grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure and pronunciation
- Higher level of Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing skills
Course Content
Everyday English
- Social expressions i.e “Never mind / take care / you must be joking”
- Numbers and dates — money, fractions, percentages, dates, phone numbers
- Giving opinions — “What did you think of the play? It was really boring”
- Requests and offers — “Could you ...? Would you ...?”
- Signs and sounds — “Dry clean only”
- On the phone — “Can I take the message?”
- Making suggestions — “Let's go shopping.”
- Agreeing and disagreeing — “So do I!”
- Expressing quantity — “How much work? That's too much”
- Informal English — “What's up?”
- Saying sorry — “I'm sorry! Excuse me!”
Grammar and Vocabulary
- Reading
The following are the reading text materials that will be used in classroom:
- Wonders of modern world
- The clown doctor
- The painter and the writer - Speaking
The following activities will be conducted in classroom to make students speak and to practise their pronunciation:
- Discussion: What's the most important invention?
- Discussion: What makes people happy?
- Describing a book or a film you like - Listening
The following listening passages will be played aloud in classroom for the Listening skills exercise
- My wonders
- Sports
- Books and films - Writing
The following writing activities will be conducted in a classroom to train students on writing skills
- Correcting mistakes
- Letters and email
- A narrative
New Fee Structure
Under the new fee structure, applicants are required to pay a non-refundable processing fee of $30 when an application for STP is submitted to ICA for consideration. Payment must be made through the ICA online portals for STP application (i.e. SOLAR or SOLAR+). Successful STP applications will only need to pay a one-time fee of $60 for the issuance of the LTP cards, regardless of the duration of the pass granted. The prevailing visa fee will continue to apply for those visa-required countries.
Foreign students will be required to pay a sum of $60 for replacement of lost or damaged STP cards.
NOTE: Fees may change periodically without prior notice.
