Introduction
Recognising the increasing demand for higher education in Singapore, the Department of Higher Education was set up in 2005. The department began by offering the University of London external Bachelor of Laws degree. In the following year, the external Bachelor of Science programme was introduced.
The pioneer students sat for their first Intermediate examination in 2006 and made BMC proud. 82.3% of them passed vis-à-vis the passing rate of 42% for the rest of the world. For Part I examination, our students again outperformed other overseas students around the world as well as the home students in the UK. They chalked up a passing rate of 84.3% against 55% and 37% respectively. The excellent results were the relentless efforts put in by our law lecturers who wanted to make the programme a great success.
The department is relentless in its efforts to ensure that students receive all the support they need to excel in their studies. In our quest to keep on producing high passing rates, intensive courses and mock examinations are conducted prior to the actual examinations. Study rooms are made available to students from Mondays to Saturdays. Our resource centre is stocked with reference books to aid students’ research work. Lecturers will not hesitate to go all the way to help students succeed.
