Introduction

BA(Hons) in Business Administratioin programme aims to promote the ‘employability’ of its graduates in order that they can thrive in an increasingly competitive employment market. It achieves this through a blend of academic study and skills development. It offers a business education, geared to professional practice, specialist careers, self employment and to the demands of general management.

Admission Requirements

Applicants for direct entry to Level 3 from other programmes within the University or elsewhere must have gained a minimum of 240 credits at Levels 1 and 2, including a minimum of 120 credits at Level 2 and are required to demonstrate that their previous studies and experience have provided a broad equivalence to the learning outcomes of Levels 1 and 2 of the programme in the relevant field.

Programme Structure

This final year top-up degree programme consists of 8 modules and the complete programme consists of 120 credit points. It is conducted over 3 semesters of about 4 months each.

Candidates having substantial or on-going work experience will be required to take Work Related Learning while those without work experience will be required to take Business and Commercial Awareness.

Course Content

Strategic Management 1

  • Research, develop strategies and plans their implementation within the limitations of the organisation.
  • Review current strategic issues, identify the contradictions and paradoxical nature of strategic decision-making and strategic planning.

Strategic Management 2

  • Focuses on strategic management in conditions of high uncertainty.
  • The interplay of management styles that is necessary when dealing across the range of activities from routine to highly innovative.

International Production and Governance

This module deals with:

  • Globalisation
  • International Production and Marketing
  • Governing Regulations

Global Marketing Ethics and Culture

  • Identify and develop marketing strategies appropriate to the firm.
  • Build and sustain competitive advantages in co-operation with other members of the firm as well as external partners.

Issues in the Global Economy

  • Explores the fundamental economic changes and their implication in the global economy.
  • Explore the issues related to the changes in the international production networks, technology, global financial structures, trade patterns, income distribution and poverty.

Contemporary Issues in Business

  • Based upon a number of themed lectures delivered by members of the research community, on a range of contemporary issues, linked to each of the key functions of business.
  • Students will undertake a piece of individual research on a contemporary business issue of their choice.

International Human Resource Management

  • Insights into problems and issues in managing international staff resources, notably recruiting, training and rewarding expatriates, and facilitating effective international team working.
  • Awareness of contexts and prominent features of HR policies and practices in arranging of national ‘host’ environment.

Work Related Learning

Those students who gain work experience and maximise their learning from this experience are significantly enhancing both their studies and their employability potential.

The aims of the Work Related Learning module are to enable students to hain maximum personal development benefit from their work experience through a series of reflective and peer learning activities, and to evaluate their work experience in terms of discipline specific knowledge to extend their understanding of the business world application of classroom studies.

This module will provide students with the opportunity to critically evaluate working practices in terms of management and leadershipstyles; the management of change; and the variety of working relationships present within an organisation. Students are asked to relate these to their own experiences with a view to informing their personal development and future career.

Business and Commercial Awareness

  • Students will role play members of an origanisational management team as they develop plan and implement a new product or service for their organisation.
  • Consolidate functional business knowledge and provide students with an opportunity to integrate theories and gain experience in a simulated business environment.

Entry Requirement

The normal entry requirements for the programme are:

  • Relevant Diploma (3-year course) from polytechnics OR
  • BTEC Higher National Diploma in Business OR
  • Other relevant equivalent qualifications which will be assessed on a case-by-case basis by the University.

In addition to the requirements stated above, students entering the programme and whose first language is not English, or students whose medium of instruction on their qualifying programme was not English, will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English to TOEFL 550/IELTS 6.0 or an equivalent recognised qualification.
