Diploma in Tourism Management

Introduction

The Diploma in Tourism Management aims to provide students with a broad understanding of the operational aspects of the international tourism industry, together with a knowledge of the basic principles which underpin the industry.

Endorsed by the HCIMA. The HCIMA was formed in 1971 and is the only internationally recognized professional management association for managers in the hospitality, leisure and tourism industries. CTH Management Programmes have been awarded HCIMA Endorsement. All learners on CTH Diploma programmes are eligible for Affiliate Membership of the HCIMA and learners who successfully complete the CTH Advanced Diploma programmes are eligible to apply for Associate (AHCIMA) membership.

Entry Requirements

  • GCE N or O Level or equivalent
  • Other qualifications may be approved on a case-by-case basis

Module Synopsis

  1. Business Computing » This module provides students with a basic understanding of the use of Information Technology in a business context through some common applications.

  2. Business Operations in Hospitality and Tourism » This module will provide students with a broad introduction into the complex world of hospitality and tourism business operations. It provides an overview of the separate functions and activities that concern managers in modern businesses. This module reflects modern concerns of hospitality and tourism business operations.

  3. Marketing for Tourism and Hospitality » To provide students with an understanding of marketing and its application in the international hotel and tourism industry, and the ways in which marketing strategies and approaches can be used to optimise product penetration.

  4. The Tourism Industry » The aim of this module is to provide students with an understanding of the nature of tourism and tourism products from both local and international perspectives. It will ensure students acquire a holistic understanding of the travel and tourism industry, including the impacts of tourism on destination economies, communities and fragile environments. Students will be expected to take a critical perspective on the effects of tourism on their own country, and how tourism can have a strategic developmental function.

  5. Finance in Hospitality and Tourism » This module will give students the knowledge, skills and techniques that will help with the management decision making process. It will look at the process and practices which take place within a hospitality business and at the analytical skills required to understand financial information.

  6. Travel Geography » The aim of this module is to provide students with a holistic understanding of travel geography from both local and international perspectives. This module reflects on the locations of travel destinations and their tourism resources. The geographical features and appeal of tourism destinations will also be investigated. Students will be expected to identify the patterns of international tourism and the inter-dependence of travel destinations.

  7. Travel Agency and Tour Guide Operations » This module provides students with a broad understanding of the retail travel industry and tour guide operations. It will provide an introduction to the principles and practices of tour guiding and travel consultancy techniques to ensure an effective business. Whilst some of this module may seem to have a European perspective, students will be encouraged to consider how to apply this knowledge to a travel agency or tour guiding business in their own country.

  8. Tourism Economics » This module will provide the knowledge and tools to establish an understanding of tourism economics and it will focus on the tourism business and the external circumstances in which it operates. It will give students the opportunity to study the main concepts of economic theory and their importance to the Tourism Industry.

  9. Special Interest Tourism » This module allows students to explore the important growth market which combines hobbies and interests, active sport and adventure activities, and social and cultural encounters with tourism.

  10. Destination Analysis » The aim of this module is to provide students with a holistic understanding of destination analysis by investigating established and developing destinations. This module reflects on the concept of travel destinations and their development. The social, cultural and political features of tourism destinations will also be investigated. Students will be expected to understand and apply a destination audit.

Examination Board. CTH Management Programmes are widely recognised by universities as offering equivalency to degree level study and CTH Diploma students may therefore gain direct entry onto the second year of a variety of hospitality degree programmes. Similarly, CTH Advanced Diploma students may enter onto their chosen degree at final year level. The Examinations are conducted five times a year, in January, March, June September and November.

Course Duration

  • Full-time: 7 Months
    Students have theory lessons for a period of 7 months at BMC on Monday to Friday.
  • Part-time: 10 Months
    Students have theory lessons for a period of 10 months at BMC on weekday nights.

Method of Delivery

Students can achieve the guided learning hours in combination of face to face classroom interactions, self study and group study as well as research work. They will be required to attend a certain number of lecture hours to support their studies, and will receive guidance to complete the learning hours.

Award Criteria

Upon completion of all 10 modules, the Diploma Level 4 certification will be awarded by Confederation of Tourism & Hospitality.

Grading System

The Grade Structure is Pass 40%, Credit 60% and Distinction 80%.

Assessment Information

CTH sets and marks the assessment for the Diploma examination. It is 100% examination. There will be 6 questions each worth 25 marks. Each question will be broken down into two or three parts with a mark allocation for each part of the question. You must choose 4 out of 6 questions. You are allowed two and a half hours for the Diploma examination.

Expected date of release of Assessment result

Assessment results / Award of certificate will be available to the students within 3 months of the last assessment for that assessment cycle. Appeal on Assessment results needs to be done within 2 weeks from the date of release of results for that assessment cycle.
