BMC's Preparatory Course for GCE 'O' Level provides a comprehensive programme that equips students with the necessary learning competencies that prepare them for the annual examination of the joint awarding authorities- Ministry of Education, Singapore and the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) for the Singapore-Cambridge GCE 'O' Levels.

Introduction

BMC's Preparatory Course for GCE 'O' Level provides a comprehensive programme that equips students with the necessary learning competencies that prepare them for the annual examination of the joint awarding authorities- Ministry of Education, Singapore and the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) for the Singapore-Cambridge GCE 'O' Levels.

The strong foundation of this programme lies on the series of internal assessments namely: Mid-Year and Preliminary Examinations, which are facilitated by the Department once in the Academic Year for the respective examination cycle. These assessments are carefully designed and prepared by the internal and competent assessors of the department, to gauge the readiness of the students for the actual examination.

Entry Requirements

  • At least 15 years old as of 1st January of the examination year.
  • Applicants should meet one of these additional requirements:
    • Pass with at least Grade 5 in English and Mathematics subjects at GCE N Level (or equivalent) OR Completed Secondary 3 with a pass (at least C6 and above) in English and Mathematics OR passed BMC Entrance Test
  • A full-time course runs 5 days in a week with each day lasting 3 hours.  Therefore, all Singaporean applicants who intend to enrol into a full-time GCE N(A) or O-Level preparatory course will need to get the approval of the Ministry of Education (MoE).  BMC will assist in submitting such applications to the MoE.
  • Any Singaporean male applicant who wants to defer from full-time national service must be enrolled as a full-time student. Such an application will need to be approved by the MoE first.  Do take note that the approval of NS deferment is at the discretion of the Ministry of Defence.
  • Admission is subject to approval of the BMC management.

  1. PEI Application Form.
  2. Birth Certificate and translated English copy, if applicable.
  3. Singapore Passport and Singapore Citizenship Certificate, if applicable.
  4. Completed Education History - Annex A (All previous and current school report cards or transcripts are enclosed).
  5. Medical Report (s) with diagnosed medical conditions, if applicable.

Details of Parents

  1. If parents are Singapore Citizens: Singapore Passport or Singapore Citizen Identification Card and Singapore Citizenzship Certificate, if applicable.
  2. If parents are foreigners: Non-Singapore Passport.
  3. Letter to school from parents stating the reason(s) for seeking admission to PEI
  4. Letter from employer of parents who have returned from overseas.

Module Synopsis

A.  English (Subject Code: 1128)

This module prepares the students to communicate effectively in English as a result of their development in the following areas:

  1. Listen, read and view critically and with accuracy, understanding and appreciation a wide range of literary and informational/functional texts from print and non-print sources.
  2. Speak, write and represent in internationally acceptable English (Standard English) that is grammatical, fluent, mutually intelligible and appropriate for different purposes, audiences, contexts and cultures.
  3. Understand and use internationally acceptable English (Standard English) grammar and vocabulary accurately and appropriately as well as understand how speakers/writers put words together and use language to communicate meaning and achieve impact.

B. Literature in English (Subject Code: 2065)

The study of Literature in English can be an effective means for students to explore moral and social issues.

  1. Via the study of literary texts, students explore the human condition and are able to better understand their own existence and values in relation to society.
  2. Literature addresses a wide range of psychological and social issues. At the heart of literary works are issues of conflict and a range of human desires that contribute to such conflict.
  3. Such exposure will encourage an understanding of moral and ethical issues, prompting students to develop an awareness of the world they live in.
  4. The study of Literature in English encourages students to explore literary contexts that promote an awareness of social factors that influence people.
  5. Literary works provide an effective way for students to appreciate and understand the different aspects of human nature, values and perspectives.

C.  Mathematics (Subject Code: 4048)

This subject provides students with the fundamental mathematical knowledge and skills. Further, at the end of the module, it aims to enable students to acquire the necessary mathematical concepts and skills for continuous learning in mathematics and related disciplines, and for applications to the real world.

D.   Science - Physics, Chemistry (Subject Code: 5076)

This science education programme seeks to develop the academic students' knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that will allow them to take an informed position on scientific issues and tensions that may be facing them in today's society.

E.   Science - Chemistry, Biology (Subject Code: 5078)

This science education programme seeks to develop the academic students' knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that will allow them to take an informed position on scientific issues and tensions that may be facing them in today's society.

F.  Principles of Accounts (Subject Code: 7175)

Accounting is an information system based on generally accepted accounting principles. It involves the recording and processing of business transactions, and communicating the information to stakeholders. The accounting information is used to evaluate business performance and facilitate decision-making. What sets the accountancy profession apart is the responsibility to act in the public’s interest.

Principles of Accounts (syllabus code 7175) is designed to provide students with a meaningful basic introduction to financial accounting and to develop an appreciation of the discipline of accounting. It is grounded in preparing, communicating and using financial information, and appreciating the need for ethical conduct. The subject places emphasis on the understanding and application of accounting knowledge to develop lifelong skills and values that will be of value in the increasingly complex world of business.

G.   Humanities - Social Studies with Geography (Subject Code: 2272)

Social Studies

The syllabus is organised around three Issues and is anchored in a set of knowledge skills and values outcomes. Geography

As a subject, Geography emphasises the integrative study of physical and human environments to enable students to gain a better understanding of
their own space and other parts of the world. The syllabus is structured around three major themes, namely ‘Our Dynamic Planet’, ‘Our Changing World’ and ‘Geographical Skills and Investigations’.

H.  Humanities - Social Studies with History (Subject Code: 2273)

societal issues that have been shaping Singapore society and the world. The knowledge, skills and values acquired through a study of these Issues will enable students to enrich and deploy their competencies to respond to real world issues and in the process, strengthen their values as citizens.

History

The syllabus seeks to examine the key forces and developments which have shaped international history in the 20th century. Studying the impact of the
large scale conflicts and the rise of new regimes will allow students to appreciate the key forces and developments that challenged Europe’s dominance in world affairs. Through a study of the devastating effects of the two World Wars and the unchecked ambitions of the authoritarian states, students will better appreciate the need for collective security to prevent future conflicts. Students will understand that attempts at world peace are often challenged by the interests and ambitions of individuals and nations. The study of Communist Russia, Nazi Germany and Japan will enable students to understand how totalitarian regimes can bring about both benefits for some, and great costs for others.

Mother Tongue (Six Months, Up to June)

I.  Chinese (Subject Code: 1160)

The mother tongue language subjects cover the understanding and application of the language. These syllabuses also intend to enhance the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of the students' mother tongue.

J.  Malay (Subject Code: 1148)

The mother tongue language subjects cover the understanding and application of the language. These syllabuses also intend to enhance the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of the students' mother tongue.

K.  Tamil (Subject Code: 1157)

The mother tongue language subjects cover the understanding and application of the language. These syllabuses also intend to enhance the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of the students' mother tongue.

L.  Additional Mathematics (Subject Code: 4047)

The syllabus is intended to prepare students adequately for A Level H2 Mathematics and H3 Mathematics, where a strong foundation in algebraic manipulation skills and mathematical reasoning skills are required. The O Level Additional Mathematics syllabus assumes knowledge of O Level Mathematics.

 

 

Duration

  • 10 Months (December-September / January-October)

Method of Delivery

Classes are conducted using the following methodologies: Lecture, Interactive Discussion, Small Group Dynamics

Award Criteria

Students shall be awarded a certificate of attendance upon meeting the minimum 75% attendance requirement for local students (part-time) and 90% for international students and local students (full-time).

Grading System

Grades reflected on the Academic Transcripts are upon 100%, wherein the following equivalents are being used: 0-49%= Failed; and 50%-100=Passed.

Assessment Information

Two (2) Internal Examinations are conducted in an Academic Year namely: Mid-Year and Preliminary Examination.
On the other hand, Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) Examination is conducted in Singapore annually in October and November.
All students are expected to register for their GCE O Level Examination online at www.seab.gov.sg.

 

Expected date of release of Assessment result

Assessment results for Internal Examinations (Mid-Year and Preliminary Examinations) are released to students within four (4) weeks of the last assessment for that examination cycle.

While the Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) Examination Results are released in January/February through the Singapore Examination and Assessment Board (SEAB).
